Based on the language coming from President Donald Trump, it definitely seems that he is considering a direct military engagement with Iran.
It is believed that Israel doesn’t have any bombers or missiles capable of carrying the weight of a “bunker buster” bomb in order to target Iran’s underground nuclear facilities; the US does. The rhetoric out of the White House is that the US wants to end the threat of Iran building nuclear weapons and sees the current Israeli attack as a means to make it happen. Analysts believe that any US engagement of this type would likely lead to wider hostilities across the region even with Iran proxies in Hamas and Hezbollah significantly weakened. Tehran is believed to be making a strategic calculation on how to conserve enough of its missile arsenal in the event of direct US involvement. Among the options for Tehran would be (a) attacks on US assets in the region including the roughly 40,000 to 50,0000 troops the US has at Middle East bases in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia and aboard US naval vessels in the region; (b) closing the commercial shipping lanes in the Straits of Hormuz (where 20% of all oil flows, much of it destined for Europe and the US); and (c) activating sleeper cells and supporters such as the Houthi’s that could conduct terror attacks and take Americans hostage.
